Founded in 1908, Morleys of Rochester is the only premises in Medway to bake from scratch onsite and provides a wide range of tasty, freshly baked products
In 1908, John William Morley started off the family bakery business with a shop in Worcester Park. Later on, two of his sons Jeffrey Morley and Matthew Frank Morley wanted to expand the business and took over the Scotch bakery in the centre of Rochester High Street and changed the name to Morley’s, the name which remains to this day. Initially, trade at the new shop was poor as at that time, the main source of bread was sliced. In order to boost trade, they placed a small sign in the window that said “Hot fresh bread for sale”. From that point the business went from strength to strength and they couldn’t make the bread fast enough.
As well as normal bread, Jeffrey Morley started to produce Celiac bread for people that have an allergy to gluten, which ended up being another big success, with this produce being sent all over the country and abroad as far away as Kuwait.
In 1983 Jeffrey Morley passed away and left the business to one of his sons Christopher Morley, who continued on the family tradition. In 1985 he gave the bakery a face lift and in doing so won an award for helping to maintain the historic look of the High Street. In 2008, Christopher Morley retired.
Still retaining the traditional baking methods, friendly customer service philosophy and time honoured products, Morley’s now also has expanded its great value range of products to include a delicious selection of pies, pasties, sausage rolls, cakes, filled rolls, cold and hot drinks and bespoke cakes for special occasions.
